sounds like a defective button. usually you need a new case unless you can get it repaired.

CPUs don't have buttons. THIS is an example of a CPU. Although a defective power button is a possibility, I suspect the problem is caused by something else, maybe a failing power supply? Please post the make/model of the system or the system specs, plus any work you may have performed on it.

I would also pick the power supply as the likely problem. Also could be bad capacitors. As requested above, post all the specs or if an OEM brand name unit, the full model number.

My vote is the motherboard, probably bad caps.

You can remove the 2-wire connection going from the motherboard to the front panel push button and just short the motherboard pins with a metal screwdriver. If it consistently starts then the switch is the problem but if you have the same symptoms then it's something else.

May I take this opportunity to say that although it is good to see you trying to help others on these forums, that some of it at present is either incorrect or well below standard. I think it would be better to wait until you are no longer posing so many new questions and are more conversant with the correct terminology.

Please do not be discouraged but just wait a little longer then start with the easy ones, or those in areas where you have specific expertise.
