I've just bought a new laptop running Windows 8.1. Laptop runs great, but I can't get it to read an external hard drive. When I plug in the external 2TB drive, it makes the sound acknowledging a new device (same as when I connect my phone, which works fine).

I know the external drive has power (little blue light on hard drive is on). I know it's being read, as the sound is made by the laptop. I know the USB cord is okay, as it has been used to connect other objects. Running out of ideas. Recommendations?

Look tor the new drive in Windows Disk Management. You may need to partition and format it before it shows in Computer.

I have similar problem but my external HDD is in use with three win7 laptops. I don't want the hdd to be reformatted but certainly need it to be recognized in win8.1 laptop.
Are there other options,please?

wilkant, you need to start your own thread here. Post as much detail as possible including the model of the external drive and what you see when viewing that drive on each of the computers when in Windows Disk Management.

DO NOT post that in this thread. Start a new one.
