computer won't charge phone

Specs: Windows XP
sanyo katana eclipse phone , will charge on our big screen tv sharp aquos , but not on the laptop or the desk top,.keeps saying usb modem new found hardware etc,.
the kids all charge their mp3's on the computers,. why not this phone?

The cable you're using to connect the phone to the PC may not be for charging. Most of those phones use the same port for USB and for charging but those are separate circuits. That is, there are pins in that port for USB and different pins for charging. If that cable is just USB then it likely won't charge the phone.

Other reasons are maybe the USB port can't put out enought current to charge the phone or you're not leaving it connected long enough.

Ok,. i see what you're saying,.
but,.. we use the same cable for evrything,. works on the tv,.
the phone does its little glowing flashing thing when its charging on the tv,.
but won't on either computer,.
I just don't want the big tv on with a blank screen while the phone is just charging,.

Maybe then the PC's USB port can't put out the amps needed to charge the phone. It doesn't seem like it would take much current but I guess that's the next most likely thing. You may need something like a powered USB hub to charge the phone.
