Computer slowed to a halt!

Specs: Win XP, 2.61 Athlon 64, 4 GB RAM
After much use, my computer started slowing down (as expected with all the crap I installed). So, I reinstalled windows (after wiping the drive clean), but it still continued to be excruciatingly slow. When I first built the computer, it would take 1-2 min to boot XP. Now? 10 minutes! I installed an antivirus to be sure it was not a virus i had on a file on a separate drive, yet i have foud nothing.

I'm suspecting it's a hardware issue, yet i can't figure out what it could be!

Ideas???

(oh, it may be worth mentioning that it has become very difficult to listen to iTunes, since every time the computer access the HDD - which is often, even when not doing anything - the music slows down and sounds distorted).

Thanks!

How long have you been using the computer ?
Check temperatures in the BIOS and try opening the case and blowing dust off of the fans, etc. Don't use a vacuum cleaner.
