computer slow, much RAM taken with avp.exe

November 11, 2009 at 11:52:31
Specs: Windows XP
Computer has slowed considerably over the last few months, though still much faster than in Symantec days, and when looking in task manager, there seem to be several instances of avp.exe, each using about 30 MB. I've run HijackThis and attach the log for perusal by you experts.

Many thanks, MadWill

Never post hijack logs without being asked. I'm sure you received a warning about it? Your post will be deleted.

BTW, if you load your system with garbage, it will run like garbage. Time to eliminate the trash.

EDIT: the moderator did you a favor & didn't delete your entire post. Nice job, OtH ;)

You also don't post how much ram you have which is critical information concerning your post.

Thanks to both jam and wanderer for your replies. I apologise if I jumped the gun. I saw a similar question from somebody who was told to run Hijackthis and post the log so I did the same. And no, I got no warning. If I've got garbage in my system I hope someone will help me get rid of it. However, I suspect I may have had garbage in my system, tried to get rid of it and been informed that some dll was missing and the programme could not be deleted. This has happened a number of times. I have 1 GB of RAM. Please let me know if you need any more critical info. Many thanks to you both.

OK, start by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager, then look at the lower left corner...how many processes do you have running?

I've just started the PC and only Eudora, Firefox and Yahoo Messenger are open and running. The Task Manager shows 42 processes running.

Hi, I feel rather abandoned... I had hoped for a quick solution judging from the initial responses. But it has been a week with no further advice or help. BTW, the task manager currently shows 38 processes running, with only Eudora and Firefox open, and after a full day's work with Word, FileMaker Pro, Yahoo Messenger and other programmes. I'd be grateful for any help.
