Solved Computer Shutting off randomly a lot.

September 6, 2012 at 11:12:56
Specs: Windows 7
Computer is shutting off randomly multiple times. I don't think it is a heat issue the highest temp I have is 60 C. I lose display on my monitor and my computer runs for a bit then shuts off and when I turn it back on it resumes like I had put it to sleep. I think I saw something about the display driver crashing one time but I'm not sure.

I'm also infected with some nasty Adware I'm not sure how to get rid of. Malware bytes isn't picking it up.

I cleaned the inside of the computer out, and still upon typing it would crash my computer. I tried to find out whether a keyboard could be the problem and I discovered it might be. So I went out and got a new keyboard and haven't had any problems again YET. I will keep it posted.

Try updating your video card drivers.

I just reformatted my computer, because I thought it might be a virus, but it just did it again a couple minutes ago. Could it still be my drivers? I think it might be my powersupply, but it always starts up when I press the power button.

It doesn't sound like the symptoms of a virus or a display drivers issue to me.

More likely it is a hardware fault of some kind. That leaves quite a few possibilities, including display card and PSU.

If it only happens after the computer has been on for a certain length of time then I would still suspect overheating somewhere - maybe CPU needs refitting. Have you cleaned the vents and heat sinks?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I clean the case and vents at least once a month, when it shuts off it will turn right back on and resume windows instantly as if I told it to sleep. Also, when it turns on and I try to start typing in the web browser I have open it will shut off again the instant I press any of my keys. This sucks :(

It also happens a lot when I start to type a message in skype. It seems to happen exclusively when I start typing something in a program. I can watch a stream or something with out a problem but as soon as I'm typing in the browser or skype it will shut off, and when the monitor goes dark I still have audio until the computer shuts off.

Updating to the newest version couldn't hurt.

.... also, if it is an add-on video card then clean its edge connectors with a pencil eraser then pop the card in and out to clear any oxide off the socket.

For that matter you could do the same with all edge connectors (including RAM).

The reason I'm saying this is because you clean the computer out once a month. If there is oxide about it is very easy to fractionally move something which then conncects with the oxide. Reseat all connectors while you are in there.

The keyboard change doesn't seem to fit with everything you said.

Maybe you had more than one issue so the symptoms became a bit confusing. You also mentioned something about adware in passing, which might account for the non-keyboard problems.

Whatever, glad to hear that it seems to be behaving itself and thanks for popping back with the update.
