computer shuts off randomly

Specs: Windows XP, AMD Athlon xp/ 512mb
It does it when you least expect it. the system will just suddenly reset without warning. what could be causing this? ive tried a different pwr supply so thats not it, its not overheating although it could have a bad thermostat. ive reinstalled windows so i don't think its a hardware conflict. what else could it be? all my periferials are onboard so its not a bad pci device. can it be a bad chipset? i wouldn't think a fried chip would let the computer even start up. does anybody else know?

"ive reinstalled windows so i don't think its a hardware conflict."
That means that it probably is a hardware conflict if you're still experiencing problems after reinstalling windows. Did you check the cpu temps in the bios ? Also run a check of the ram using memetest.

How do you know it's not overheating?
Have you checked your fan on your CPU?
Power supply problems can also cause weird restarts or freezups as can a bad fan.
