Computer shuts down after 20 minutes.

December 6, 2011 at 15:01:44
Specs: Ubuntu 11.1, i5 2500k 3.3GHz 8GiB DDR3
I just built this computer and it ran fine for a few days.

i5 quad-core 3.3GHz
Gigabyte MB Z68X-UD3H-B3
650 watt Antec PSU

I didn't change my usage habits much at all, but the yesterday night it just shut off like someone pulled the plug.

I tried to turn it on again and it ran for 15 seconds and shut off. A few more times of that and it quit doing anything at all for awhile.

I went out and bought a new psu and when I came back it started up and ran for another 20 mins no problem, before I installed the new PSU. Then the same thing. It shut itself off like pulling the plug and then would only run for 15 seconds.

So I took out the old PSU and put in the new one. It ran for 20 minutes and then... same thing.

I guess that means its not the PSU. It must be the MB? But what could have gone wrong? Just a faulty board?

Any ideas of what to do? I'd perfer not to have to rebuild the thing...

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that trying to key into BIOS does nothing to stop the shutdown. It will shutdown anyway.
I also tried pulling the powerswitch lead after startup but that did nothing.
Also, any USB devices that were plugged in before the shutdown remain on while the rest of the computer is off. ???

See event viewer logs.

Run memtest.

Running through the MB trouble shooting protocoll right now. You'll never guess what it seems to be....

A faulty cord on the usb mouse.

Shut it down and started adding things one by one. After the hard drive seemed to be fine, I added the mouse and whamo... the thing shut off.

Going to buy another one now. I'll let you know if that really fixed it. Thanks for your help peeps!

Never heard of any mouse that shut down a system. See event log.

So I haven't checked the event logs but I am certain the mouse was the problem.

I stripped it down to just the motherboard and restarted it each time adding a new element. First the USB cables, then the Harddrive, then the keyboard then the mouse... and as I moved the mouse around the pointer froze, then the wireless said it was disconnected and then the whole thing shut down. So I unplugged the mouse and restarted. It stayed on for some time. I plugged in the mouse and shook it... instantly went off.

I had a usb extension cable on the mouse and so I think it was causing a short intermittently when I moved the mouse around forcing the computer to shutdown.

I've had a new mouse plugged in for about 24 hours now and nary a hiccup.

Thanks again, all, for your help.

Just as a final word-

After I bought the new mouse I have had no problems whatsoever.

As I can't figure out how to mark the issue as solved or mark a 'best answer' this will have to do.

Thanks again for all your helps.
