Specs: Windows XP, 1GB
Okay! So every time my computer is full of
files, programs etc. I reinstall Windows XP and
everything is lighting fast with clean install but
once I start adding programs like Microsoft
Office, Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop,
Flash, Firefox, Ituenes, skype, msn live,
antivirus AVG, things start to slow down!
I wanted to buy a new computer but I was
considering maybe updating the hardware on
my current computer.

Right now I have an external 1 TB hard drive
where i save all my music, movies, pictures,

Internal hard drive is 60 GB
Currently I have 40 GB Free

Processor speed 3.07 ghz
RAM 512 x 2 = 1 GB

What do you guys recommend to improve my
pc performance?

Remove AVG
And run the Remover Tool:

Install the lighter Free Avira (of which I use)

Purchase 2x 1 Gig of Ram (compatible to your board)
And remove the two 512megs

Also you might want to consider upgrading the HardDrive
60Gig came out a long time ago, and may be a bit slow by now, through wear and tear

Many programs setup to run in the background when you boot up. This is not necessary. Always use custom install when installing any programs that have that option. Read the screens and know exactly what you are installing.

Installed program aren't a drain on your system unless they are open.

If you run lots of programs then additional RAM would help, as suggested above.

Download and use Ccleaner Slim daily. Get it below.

Go to disk management and analyze your partitions occasionally and defrag when instructed to.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah! well I am getting 2 GB of DDR ram. Is DDR2 ram better? I
know my motherboard does not support DDR2 but I was also
considering updating my motherboard.

Problem is I don't want to buy computer case so I kinda want to
find one that matches my compact presario case :S

Upgrading piecemeal is not effective. If you keep the same processor then you aren't going to run much faster, if at all.

I would advise you to figure out where to make a second copy of all your personal data on the external drive. ALL hard drives eventually fail. At that time you will come here begging for help and there may not be any help to give.

IMO the most secure method of archiving files is to burn them to optical disk. DVDR holds 4.4GB.

You could also make copies on another hard drive somewhere. Either internal or external. Back them up though.

Yes DDR2 is better than DDR, but if you purchase a new motherboard it may come with DDR3, so don't buy the Ram yet.

Also, do not use your old HP case, the front side connections to the motherboard are likely a block and not individual wires, therefore it won't work with a new motherboard.
Plus it won't be a HP, and will basically be strange :)
You need a new case to go with your new motherboard

o_O well, if i replace the motherboard and buy new case then it will all be a generic pc. I will try to see if ram improves performance with my current pc if not then I might consider building one in the future.

I don't know why but firefox sometimes seems to take a lot of memory resources sometimes up to 500 mb :S

What's a good alternative light weight browser ?
I use winamp for my music and that doesn't take that much memory.

I use Firefox, and notice no issue (except when starting to tell you the truth)

Anyway, did you try uninstalling AVG and then running the Remover Tool ? (as I suggested above)

That's what I'd do ;)

Also you can run this little program and turn off not required known startups:

"Well, i have not removed AVG because I like it"

Ah huh (?)

Well anyway, remove AVG because you have the OLD version
And you are best off either updating it (of which I wouldn't)
Or removing it as stated above (the Remover Tool MUST be run as well)

I didn't go through your log as I'm positive you must have malware installed (since using the old AVG)

You can run an online scan with eset which may prove my point:

Yes I know
This from years of debate across the web from me to others
But its always strangely ironic when the user finally uninstalls AVG and runs the Remover Tool. Then runs (installs) free avira, and run a full updated scan

Then all of a sudden viruses are detected and removed
I tend to get through to about 99% of members who need support
But support members never understand me, I've kinda got use to it

I will help the member needing support, I'm not interested in the slightest of other support members point of view

You can read some of my 18,000 support posts here:

I am using 2Gig of installed Ram on XP SP3
