Solved Computer Doesn't Recognize Graphics Card

October 17, 2015 at 12:01:06
Specs: Windows 7
I am not a technical genuis so please bear with me. I have an RADEON R7 260x graphics card and I just reinstalled windows on my computer. I have tried to download and install my graphics driver through AMD Catalyst, but it doesn't work. In device manager it says that my Display Adapter is "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and I have tried manually installing the driver through device manager with this directory: C:\AMD\Support\ (etc etc) . Also, my monitor is directly hooked up to my graphics card NOT my motherboard. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?

Are you taking the same steps as the first time you installed this card? Was the card installed when you reinstalled the OS? And when you reinstalled Windows 7 did you use the same 32 or 64bit selection as the original install? I'm just wondering if the drivers you are trying to use are still compatible ones.

Also, it looks like the release date for windows 7 was in 2009 and your GPU was announced in 2013. Have you done all the windows updates?

#2 & 3: Please note that the best method for drivers is to download graphics drivers from the chip maker, in this case AMD as pointed out in #1 above. All other things about Windows does not effect the graphics card. With any reinstall, it is important to get all updates to Windows but you need to make sure all drivers are up to date first and all is working correctly.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I couldn't install drivers that I downloaded from the official AMD site.I had to find instalation CD for my graphics card and only then I was able to instal drivers, after that I was able to download latest driver update from official site and install it.
