Solved Computer doesn't recognize graphics card.

April 13, 2014 at 02:24:59
Specs: Windows 7
I am not a technical genuis so please bear with me. I have an ATI RADEON HD 4600 graphics card and I just reinstalled windows on my computer. I have tried to download and install my graphics driver through AMD Catalyst, but it doesn't work. In device manager it says that my Display Adapter is "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and I have tried manually installing the driver through device manager with this directory: C:\AMD\Support\ (etc etc) . Also, my monitor is directly hooked up to my graphics card NOT my motherboard. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?

See More: Computer doesnt recognize graphics card.

I actually did some more digging online and discovered that my graphics card has a bug, I was able to find a fix for this issue by downloading a reloaded version of AMD Catalyst with the driver I needed. I have posted the link here to where I found the fix to my problem in case anyone else comes across the same issue. Thanks everyone for your help!

"my monitor is directly hooked up to my graphics card NOT my motherboard"

And you're getting a display, correct? Then the problem must be that you're attempting to install the wrong driver. You don't say if you have Win7 32-bit or 64-bit? Download the driver from here:

To riider and kuwese:

I have already downloaded that very driver (windows 64 bit) and gone through the entire installation without Catalyst acknowledging any errors. I have included the report below.

I should also say that I have also tried AMD Catalyst's auto detect as well as clean installing when repeating the process. (I downloaded the driver again as per kuwese's link just to make sure)

Forgive my ignorance but I'm not sure what you mean by installing the driver 'through AMD catalyst'. Or is that a necessary step when installing the driver? I notice it's part of the 153 meg download. But if you have the 4600 card and the downloaded driver file don't you just run that file to install the drivers? It looks like you've installed AMD catalyst but not the drivers

I suggest you uninstall everything AMD-related and then run the downloaded file again. If an optioni to 'install drivers only' is shown then do that.

As far as I know that is how AMD has people install their drivers with a program called AMD Catalyst. I thought this too, but in the description it says "drivers and catalyst". I have also done clean installs repeatedly but to no avail. I have pasted the description AMD provides below.

Description:
Package contains the following graphics drivers and dependent/required software for the products specified in the current version's official release notes for the 64 bit version of Windows Vista and Windows 7:
Display Driver ver. 8.97.100.11
OpenCL(tm) Driver 10.0.937.2
Catalyst Control Center 2013.0429.2312.39747รง

This is a fluff piece about catalyst control center from tomsguide:

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/catalys...

As with similar software provided by other video manufacturers it doesn't seem to be necessary but provides an easier process to change video settings. Here's a discussion on removing it and/or the drivers:

You're welcome. After a few days, maybe a week, it'll let anyone choose a 'best answer'. The only stipulation is a person can't choose their own answer.
