Solved Compaq V2405US Ethernet Boot problem

March 7, 2013 at 14:06:02
Specs: Windows XP
I bought Compaq V2405US and when you start it it gives the error message: Realtek RTL8139(x)/8130/810x Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PEX-E61: Media test failure, Check Cable
PEX-M0F: Exiting PEX Rom
I have figured out it is looking for a network to boot to. I tried to go into to the startup and change the boot order, but it still tries to boot through thr ethernet. Can anyone help

The hard drive has no operating system on it so the bios tries to boot from it, sees nothing is there and goes on to the next boot device.

Check the boot options and see if you can boot from a restore partition. There may or may not be one there. If not you'll need to order restore disks from compaq or, if they no longer have them, look for a third party source on that internet thing. Or you'll need to buy a compatible OS installation disk.

If you get a disk you'll need to set the boot order so the CD/DVD drive you want to boot the disk from is first in the boot order.

You need to change the setting in the BIOS.

Yeah, network boot should be the last boot option. You at least want the hard drive to come before the network boot.

I've noticed with some hp/compaq bios' you have to separately enable a boot device. That is, even if it's in the proper place in the boot order if it's not enabled as a boot device then the process will skip it. An enabled boot device will usually have a checkmark by it.

If the hard drive is enabled and comes before the network in the boot order then you must have a problem with your hard drive.

I went into the BIOS and it showed network as the last boot option.
The full error message on screen is:
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.0 (build 082)
Copy Right © 1997-2000 Intel Corporation
Realtek RTL8139(x)/8130/810x Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
PEX-E61: Media test failure, Check Cable
PEX-M0F: Exiting PEX Rom

I tried tro connect it to my home Network but it is looking for a server. It has the following message on it:
Realtek RTL8139(x)/8130/810x Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (020326)
Client Mac Addr: 00 C0 9F D9 B0 GUID 80616B19-20CB-D911-9D7B-00C09FD9CAB0 DCHP...

I ran the hard drive test from the BIOS and it shows the hard drive is good. I can not even get it to boot from the Windows XP Start-up disk.

I cannot figure out how to get it to stop it from trying to boot over the ethernet.
It has the PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility BIOS Version F.11
Any Suggestions

Remove or disable the network boot from the boot order.

If you want it to boot from the xp cd put that cdrom as the first boot device.

Did anything happen to it between the last time it worked OK--booted successfully from the hard drive--and the first time it didn't?
