CD-ROM Drive Stoped Reading Disks

CD-ROM Drive Stoped Reading Disks.
It basically says when i push a disk into my laptops disk reader, It spins for 3 seconds and then seems to give up. And when I check My Computer as I'm doing this its there before i start but after it stops spinning the "CD-ROM" Icon and item are gone, And they don't come back till a full restart. Could this be the crappy new Microsoft Update?

If you had an older OS I'd say it was definately a bad cdrom or maybe cd, but with XP and above there seem to be some OS related failures. But first try booting the laptop with a known good bootable cd. If it boots OK then it must be a software problem. If not, then it's the cdrom.

If it's not booting from a known-good cd then then the cdrom must be bad--or maybe its data cable is loose or bad.
