Specs: Windows XP
the system recognizes the cdrom device manager says it is working but when I try to run program from it it says there is no disk and nothing shows in explore either

Assuming this is a dual drive can it read DVD media?

Did this occur suddenly?

Have you recently installed any new hardware or software programs? If so, what?

Device manager can't know if it's working properly. It doesn't run any physical diagnostics. It only knows the cdrom's firmware is OK and that it's set up correctly as a hardware device.
