Specs: Windows Vista
My CD/DVD drive isn't working. I have Windows Vista Home edition. I can hear it trying to read the CD and there is the little cd icon on the mouse when I put a disc in. I've tried many different types of CDs and DVDs (music, movies, data) and nothing will work. I have already tried installing Driver updates twice and that didn't do anything. It stopped working while I was adding some music to itunes from CD. It just stopped responding. Please help if you can. It is appreciated! :-)

An easy way to test whether it's hardware or software problem is to put a bootable CD in the drive such as an install diskand try to boot from it. If it won't read the disk before the operating system boots up then it's a hardware issue. You can try running a lenscleaning disk through it and see if that improves the situation, otherwise the laser might be worn out and replacing the drive is then indicated.
Another simple thing to try is to re-seat the data cable since it does appear to be getting power.

Have you rebooted? Is the drive assigned a drive letter? What is showing in Disk Management? Also, is your laptop still under warranty?

I will try to run a boot disc to see if that works. That's a good idea. Thank you.

I have rebooted the computer many times. It hasn't been working for about a month and the computer is no longer under warranty. :-( The drive is assigned to E: but I'm not sure what you mean by Disk Management...

Thanks for the replies and help. :-) Hopefully I can get it working without having to replace the drive or buy an external one.
