CD/DVD drive not reading any discs AT ALL

November 20, 2010 at 13:54:07
Specs: Windows Vista
Ok, so my drive has for quite a while now stopped working, reading, idk what to call it...I discovered this as soon as I popped in The Sims 2: Open for Business and installed it. The next day, my drive pooped out on me. It just won't read anymore discs. Period. It doesn't show up anymore when I check under "My Computer". All I have in there is my local disc, but thats not my concern.
So I go on to check my device manager and check under "disk drives"...I actually see my device, a Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00 ( which I've read really sucks...), run a check, and it tells me it's working just fine (I DON'T THINK SO)...
Soo...I'm confused. My brother has tried reseating it for me and it worked for a while but pooped out again a week later (after I installed ts2 open for business). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, to no avail...Is this, as I dread, something to do with my motherboard, or do I just need to replace the drive? I really don't want to take it to a store and have to pay over a hundred bucks to get it fixed, especially if I could have easily fixed it myself.
All I want is to play Sims 2 and make babies, darn it. : (

Try to boot to a known good cd or dvd. If it boots then maybe try a system restore point. See help and support pages for restore. If it doesn't boot then the only slim chance is you could try to reflash cd firmware if it exists. I doubt it will help but then buy new cd or better still try out a known good cd drive. Could be some part of motherboard or connector.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?
