CD/DVD drive not found

Hitachi / Gce-8483b
January 10, 2010 at 14:49:34
Specs: Windows XP, HE SP3, Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz/2GB RAM
When booting the BIOS window says CD/DVD drive not found. System has a CD re-writable drive, a DVD re-writable drive, and a floppy drive. All worked until recently, then none found. Have tried removing and reinstalling, and restoring. Problem resolved temporarily, the drive stopped when in use (half way through loading a music CD) with an error message that a file was missing. Any thoughts?

If one drive on a shared cable dies neither will work. You need to disconnect them one by one. Before that, check the cable to motherboard just in case it came loose. Very doubtful though.

If the drives do not show in the POST screens at start up then nothing you can do after that will help.

Maddening! I've been trying to figure this out for over a month, working on the assumption that all the drives couldn't have gone bad at once. Verifying drivers, trying to correct the BIOS, restoring, removing and re-installing the drives. Nothing worked. Now you come along and tell me that if one drive fails on a common cable, none of them will work. You are indeed correct. Disconnected one drive and the others reappeared. Many thanks.

You are welcome. You should have come here and asked a month ago, LOL.
