CD\CDRW drives aren't working

January 5, 2010 at 11:48:03
Specs: Windows XP
Hello recently my CD-ROM and CD-RW drives aren't being detected by windows. They've worked fine for as long as I've had the computer. The computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 Series. Both drives work fine in Ubuntu Linux ,so i think it may be a driver problem.

So the drives are not seen in either My Computer or Disk Management?

These are both internal drives aren't they?

Do the drives show in the POST screens at start up?

1. No, they are not seen in My Computer, but I'll have to check and see if they're in disk management.

2. Yes, they are both internal drives.

3. What are the POST screens. Do you mean like when the BIOS comes up you press F12 and it brings up all the info about the computer, or is it something different?

Thanks alot for your help.

Your understanding of the POST screens is OK. So, are the drives identified in those screens along with the hard drive, RAM, etc.?

Yes, the drives are in the POST screen. They show up as secondary drive master and secondary drive slave.
Also they do not show up in disk management.

Again thanks alot for your help.

Then go to the link below and verify that is your model. Then download all the drivers for the computer. Save them to disk and then install them. The chipset drivers are what is keeping your CD drives from showing.

You can download them to your hard drive first. Then after the CD drives work burn the file to disk for future use.

I would install all the drivers. Just don't try to update the BIOS.
