cd drive won't eject on a desktop Vista32

Specs: Windows Vista 32bit
I have a Gateway GTS408 desktop computer that is about 3 years old and is running Vista 32bit. The CD/DVD drive is an internal ATAPI DVD W DH16W1P ATA device that is IDE and came with the desktop. For the last several months the eject has gotten finicky, and now will not eject at all (there is currently no disk inside). I noticed when it started going bad, it would usually eject better if there was a disk inside, and would almost never eject when there was no disk inside. Currently it just makes a loud clunk noise when you either press the button to eject or use software to try and make it eject. I think it may be mechanical problem with the drive eject mechanisms? Any help would be greatly appreciated before I break down and go buy and install a new one. Thanks!

You pretty much diagnosed your own problem. Buy a new one, they're cheap. It doesn't pay to mess with them anymore.

Tried the paper clip trick listed by another user and that worked. Hopefully I won't have to do that everytime.

Thanks for all of your help! The paper clip trick will get me by for the time being, and when I have time (and money) I'll probably buy and install a newer and better one! Any recommendations? I saw on one site that Buslink has a new 52X / 32 / 52 one for $99 which would work with mine. Any other / cheaper suggestions?
Have a great weekend, and thanks for all the input from everyone!

No need to pay that much for a burner. Look at Newegg.com. Great place to do business.

grasshopper, you were right. newegg was great. They had the same BUSlink 52/16/32/52 drive, but had it for $49.99. Saved 50 bucks compared to the other site I was looking at. Just ordered it, and should be here in 3 business days. Looking forward to the speed and no more headaches messing around with my old drive. Thanks!
