CD Drive not reading regular CDs

November 1, 2010 at 16:08:06
Specs: Windows Vista
I am running a Dell Inspiron 531, with Vista. My CD Drive is an Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-5170S SCSI. If I try to run a standard music CD that I purchased from the store (not a burned copy), it will not read (I should say, it will not acknowledge it at all). However, if I insert ANY kind of DVD-R, it will read those just fine.

I have disable, restarted, luck. I have uninstalled, restarted and had the system automatically reinstall. I have checked for driver updates. They all say the drivers are up to date. I ran Microsoft FixIt, and all it will say is that the disc is not readable.

I've even tried cleaning the lens. Still no go.

This is the case with any type of purchased music CD.

Any thoughts?

Any other CD's work, though, like a game or burned data?

It's a work in progress! =P

I just tried a game disk and it would not read that. Unfortunately, I don't have any burned data cds here at home.

It would read a DVD-R video (without the sound, however) and a DVD-R that contained photos.
