cd burning software won't recognize burners

Specs: Windows 2000
I'm using Win2k Pro. I spent several years burning CDs easily on a generic IDE player/burner, using Roxio and other burner software. Recently my drive went south and I bought another similar one, which I put into an external case. Roxio Creator didn't see it at all, even after I reinstalled. Other burning software recognized it but wouldn't burn to it (apparently seeing it as only a player). I then bought an external Kanguru QS2. Same thing. I'm now using an ASUS slim burner, and it burns fine. All of my programs see it and burn to it. But none of my programs will burn to either of the other burners, although they see it. I'd really prefer to use one of the full-sized burners. Any suggestions?

Try this.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Older burner software didn't have the capability to use USB drives. Likely you just need a newer version of whatever you use.
