cant use cd rom after computer cleaned

Specs: Windows XP
paid a computer dude (he has his own business-supposed to be legit) to clean junk out of computer and increase the speed. When I got them back I hooked them up and the cd roms on both computers wont work. In device manager both computers say that the cd roms are installed and no problems noted. But when you put a cd in and click on that drive it doesn't recognize that anything is there. This is on BOTH computers. I have used this guy before but there are reasons why I cannot call him to come fix it. His wife said the computers worked before she released them to me. But I dont think she ever tried the cd rom. Anyway, I cant ask him to fix it. How do I get the cd roms recognized. Trying to setup a network with one other computer. But since I cant use the cdroms on 2 of the computers I cannot setup one.

thanks I will try it. The problem with this might be that I cant connect to internet on those two computers. Wired or wireless. He put firefox as browser and I use Explorer. Everything seems all messed up. I tried to setup a home network several times and I have about 6 of them that pop up and I cant use any of them. The guys wife had gotten online using the computers before I picked them up. I couldn't connect. I am trying to move the modem and router to these two computers. So I will try to get to this site to have it diagnose my system. Thanks
