I would create a linux boot cd like Knoppix, to copy the files you need then reinstall.

Or, you can try chkdsk in safe mode, or try memtest86 to check the RAM

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

Sorry to appear thick! but i'm not that brill on these things!

chkdsk in safe mode, or try memtest86 to check the RAM - do you mean write this in the command prompt section of the system recovery options

Thanks

in safe mode, run chkdsk c: /f or from cmd.
memtest 86, google, create bootable disk to test ram

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

Thanks for help, I managed to download a Ubuntu disc from another laptop and then got all files safely backed up and then rebooted the laptop with recovery disc. Any ideas why there was only 3 restore points though, this doesn't seem normal.

Thanks

Soory, no idea about why there are only 3 restore points.

It could be, that a file cleaner of some sort removed them?

ie something you ran?

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.
