The lit green led is probably the one that indicates the AC adapter is plugged in.
That's often on even when the computer is not running.
You can confirm that by unplugging the AC adapter from the laptop.

If the battery is installed when you plug that in, the led may go out in a short time if the batteryis fully charged, but it will always light up when you first plug the AC adapter in.

It's extremely unlikely there's anything wrong with the power switch, but if the power button is sticking in the down position such that the power switch is always on, the computer will NOT start up.

A hard drive problem does NOT cause the computer to not boot at all.

Video problems are common on laptops, however, if you hear no beep while booting and the grandson did hear that before, and if you see no other leds light up, the laptop has hardware problems.
Ask your grandson those questions.

If the same thing happens on battery power too (with a/c adapter not connected) it could be an internal component fault. You need to get a laptop repair shop to take a look at it, but most of them don't know what to do with it if it's totally dead.

Ask your grandson these questions....

Have you, or is it possible someone else who had access to this computer...
- dropped it, or dropped anything on it, or otherwise exposed it to a physical jolt ?
- spilled liquid on it, or sprayed it with liquid, or exposed it to liquid such as rain ?

Since the computer last worked properly all the time, has there been a power failure event that happened while the AC adapter was plugged in ?

Those things are the most frequent reasons something inside the laptop has been damaged.
......

The main battery can develop internal shorts.
Try removing it and connecting only the AC to DC adapter to the laptop, then trying to boot it.

I removed the battery and used just the ac power adapter. The green power light is on but when I press the power on button there is no reponse. Maybe the power on buttom is bad? Would a bad hard drive do this?
