Can't install scanner, no port?

March 28, 2009 at 04:57:38
Specs: Windows XP Pro, -
Basically, I've got a lexmark all in one printer, scanner and copier. I want to install the printer and scanner only; got the drivers for them. I started with the printer, went through the add printer wizard, selected the drivers, then selected the USB01 port. Installed them and now th eprinter works fine. However, when i did the same for the scanner when tithe wizard got to the selet port screen it only gave me two options, LTP1 printer port or COM1 port, no USB port - I just selected the printer port but, of course the scanner doesn't work.

I'm guessing it won't show me the USB port because it thinks the printer is already using it, obviously not realising they're both the same machine using the same port. Any way I can change the scanner to use USB01 port? Via the registry or some other way I've not found yet? Thanks.

... Never mind. Typically not long after I posted this I fixed it. I went into device manager ona whim and noticed two devices that had a big yellow question mark, labeled 5400 series (my printer/scanner), so I deleted the printer and scanner fthen went back to device manager and selected those devices and got windows to reinstall the drivers (searching automatically), it did both of them, and now they both work.

Why would you think you had to install the features separately? There is only one interface to the computer.

How was I supposed to know Windows is too thick to realise it was an all in one?

... Actually, stupid question. Windows is too thick to do a lot of things...
