Just to make sure, see if it might already be installed:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...

and isn't notifying you when a connection is made. Make sure the printer is ON.

Here's some general info on installing a printer:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...

If it's not the port it must be either the cable or the printer. I know you've tried different cables but have you tried the printer again on the computer it previously worked on?

Did the printer ever work? Is this a new install? To install the printer, you need to install the drivers. You should have gotten a disk with the printer. If you did, insert the disk and follow the instructions. If you don't have a disk, you can get the drivers from the HP website..

I see this model is usb only?

Perhaps start with the hp checklist as here:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/...

Not sure if this hp support document will be of any help... but perhaps a look-see?

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/...

There is also a UPD (universal printer driver) for the the printer; see on this link - and scroll down a quite a way to find your model:

http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/...

(The printer is included in the first lengthy list...)

Here's the HP page with the drivers and all the info you need to get it up and running. The printer won't be recognized until the drivers are installed.

Both the links in #3 and #6 take you down the route of installing the printer and so on.

Generally the advice (at least for Canon printers) is to start installing the drivers; then connect the printer via usb (when prompted); then carry on with other drivers (network etc.) if appropriate.

I'd think the computer would detect something when the printer is connected even with no drivers installed. Do other devices work OK on the ports you've tried?
