Can't access files through HD Caddy

Specs: Windows 7, Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 / 4Gb Ram
I had a Maxtor Shared Storage II drive with two SATA 500Gb disks set up as one contiguous disk (RAID0). The device failed at the motherboard so I got a external caddy to try to see if I could still use the disks and more importantly, access the data on them.

When I installed either disk in the caddy for the first time it installed the drivers with no problem but no volume appeared in windows explorer, not could I access it through dos. The only place the disks appear is in the Computer Management control panel under Disk Management where each disk shows five partitions, four under 1Gb each and one close to 500Gb, all with no file system. They all display as primary partitions and healthy and the first one also shows as the active partition.

I realise now that because the volume existed over both disks that I can't access each disk individually - if I right-click on any of the partitions the only choice I get is to Delete Volume - but is there any way I can access the data on them? Is there any software out there that can read the disk without it having a letter assigned? And finally, if as a last resort I did delete the volumes and reformat it would the data still exist and be retrievable?

Many thanks in advance,

Have you checked with Maxtor/Seagate?

They may have something (program and/or hardware) that overcomes your problem.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Can't read Raid0 drives one at a time. Must be installed as a pair with proper hardware and/or software.
