cannot pass booting screen

Specs: Windows 95
ok so i just found a really old laptop in my house. its a compaq armada 4120. ancient. anyways ive tried everything to get it to the actual windows desktop it shows the windows 95 screen then goes to a black screen with the device name, chipset type, firmware version, etc. and then towards the bottom it reads "C:\>" ive tried typing in numerous things and then it reads "bad command or file name" like i said, i cannot access anything except this stupid screen and unfortunately do not have the original windows 95 disc. Please help!

Likely the drive was formatted and then the system files were added to make it bootable. If that's the case you'll need to install 95 with an installation cd.

At the c:\> prompt type DIR and enter. You'll probably only see one file--COMMAND.COM. Anyway, do that and post back results.

Well like I said I am unable to find the windows 95 disc. I have
a windows 98 disc and tried when I put it in nothing showed
up. I tried typing DIR and a bunch of things popped up (in list
form) with what seemed to look like different dates to the right
of them. And then the C:\> showed up again.

You can do a dir/p. That'll list the contents one page at a time. Post back the date assocaited with command.com and see if there's a windows directory.

You can also do dir/a:h and post back the size of msdos.sys.

Try typing win and enter at the prompt and see if windows starts up.
