cannot open icons on desktop

Specs: windows xp home
as a last resort after many problems with my
computer I reset the system restore point to an earlier
date. Now i cannot open icons on the desktop and
cannot connect to the internet. i tried to reset the
system restore point back to the original date but
every time i try a dialogue box says to restart the
computer. any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Whenever you do a system restore, you have to restart the computer for the changes to take place. If you restore it to a point before certain programs were installed, they will no longer work, and need to be reinstalled.

Will Internet Explorer work if you go to the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer folder, open it and double click the iexplore.exe file? It won't hurt to try the instructions in Responce Number 1 in the thread at the link below.

thanks very much for the advice, unfortunately it didnt work.
nothing happens when i double click on iexplore.exe. I have
also found now that also i cannot transfer any files to or from
the computer. i only reset the system restore to one week
previous so it is not because there is no programme to support
the various files.
