Specs: Windows XP, 966 mh / 512 mb
trying to install a Hitachi external hard drive on a win XP machine and I keep getting a message that "you cannot install more than one device at a time. you have to wait until the current installation is finished...."

I have tried other suggested registry fixes but nothing works

Might try a restore point.

Some install seems to be hung up or not finished.

Have you tried rebooting? If nothing else, you may get a message telling you what is trying to install. Could be malware.

The message is unusual anyway. Shouldn't get anything but the ding indicating the USB external is ready.

Did you by chance, just install WinXP?

Jefro: thanks so much! I hadn't thought of that. When I took it back two days, it worked! Really appreciate your help.
