You need to test the hard drive as it may be getting near to it's failure point, in which case a new hard drive is required. Test it with the drive manufacturer's own diagnostic software for DOS which is an ISO file.

You must burn this ISO file to a CD, using the free IMGBurn from here:
http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/

Then boot your faulty PC or laptop from that CD to run the drive test.
The links to the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software are here:

Thanks plp but that is not the problem. This is my wife's netbook. No CD drive available. I have added a new user and can see desktop and startup. I have run malewarebytes, avira antivirus, and superantispyware. Removed lots of viruses, adware, and malware. Now the question is can I see or recover my wife's files. When I am on as her user accoint there is nothing in start-up menu or programs. Any suggestion or is her stuff gone now?

How are you running any of those programs if the hard drive is not detected? Where are you seeing that message?

So this IS a Windows based netbook?

Yes this is a windows based netbook Samsung N10 I believe. After I was able to initiate another user I had access to a start menu and internet. The issue is as my wife's user acct there is nothing shown on the desktop. I now have the malewarebytes, superantispyware, and avira antivirus in the start menu for my wife's account but cannot locate any documnets, pictures, etc and no icons on the desktop. Do you think these thinks are hidden? Are they recoverable? I cannot even delete her account.

So your statement that no hard drive detected is obviously not accurate?

Do you have a task bar at the bottom of the screen? If not, slowly pass the cursor up and down at the bottom of the screen until you see a two headed arrow. At that time left click and hold. Then drag upward to show the task bar. Then click on the task bar and untick auto hide the task bar.

If you see a start orb in the task bar right click on it and choose properties. Change to Windows classic.

Thanks for your help everyone but i think I have it resolved. For your interest there was a number of trojan viruses hiding in the registry. One of them basically said no desktop. Once I eliminated that one I was able to get back the programs. The virus basically would not allow visibility of the start menu nor the desktop or programs. By loading malewarebytes by memory stick from other computer along with super antispyware and avira antivirus and running the programs under the user account affected, I was able to recover desktop and start menu. Lost some picture files but at least operational and clean now. Thanks for all the suggestions.
