Can not access files from external hard drive

January 20, 2012 at 11:54:11
Specs: Macintosh
I can not access my external hard drive from my computer. I know the files are still there because when I check the properties, there is 300 gigs used and 200 gigs left. When I connect my hard drive to my computer it asks if I want to reformat it. I know this will erase everything so I click no. However, when I click no, my computer just can't open it at all. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!I've tried on Windows XP and Windows 7.

Sounds like you disconnected the external improperly. You should always use the safely remove icon in the tray. That assumes you are using Windows.

You should be able to repair the partition by using a utility called testdisk. Be sure to read the tutorials before using. Get testdisk at the link below.

Hi Veekie,

Why do you advise Macintosh in the specs, then advise os as XP or W7?

Presume the connection is usb.

Please advise make and model of external drive and under which os it was written.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.
