Specs: Windows XP, 1GB
Can my Mats---a DVD-RAM SW-9581 drive be upgraded to handle 4x DVD-RW discs? Apparently it can only handle 1x DVD-RW discs.
My PC is running WinXp SP3 home edition.

That drive is about 7 years old. If any firmware updates are available I doubt they would do what you need. I suggest you just purchase a new combo drive. Optical drives are considered to be disposable hardware.

If you live in the USA or Canada then look at newegg.com for a new drive. I assume you need an IDE/ATA type. The link below is filtering for only that type drive. Some even have free shipping. I have had good luck with Liteon drives.

The only way to increase the speed would be to buy a new burner. Your drive is at least 7 yrs old, how come you're not complaining about how slow the other speeds are?
