Solved Can I use my ol Xbox 360s hard drive on my PC

My old Xbox 360 suffered from the ring of death about two years back. I fixed it a couple of times, (not with the toul trick) but it kept crashing on me while playing. So, I gave up and bought a new one. Anyways, now I would like to use the hard drive on my desktop. I took it out from the xbox and it has the SATA cable conector and the one that connects to the PS, so I pluged it in. I turned on the PC and nothing happens (it doesn't read it). How can I properly install it, or could it even be done?
Do I have to do anything special with the BIOS or is a 300w PS not enough?
Come on mickliq I know you got me on this.

I haven't used one from an x-box but I have pulled one from a dvr. I imagine they are about the same. I am betting the x-box uses it's own proprietary operating system much like my dvr did. In my case any files stored on it can not be read from within windows. Look in disk management and see if the drive shows up there at all. If it does you should be able to format it to use with windows.

As for the bios I would check to see if the drive is recognized there but that is about it. As for the power supply 300 watts may be borderline for your system not knowing what hardware you have I am not sure. Also once you have the drive hooked up do you hear it or feel it spinning? If not it may be dead if not recognized in the bios or disk management.

If it is good it will I am sure need to be formatted to work with windows. Whatever is on it now is no good to you outside of another x-box maybe.

If you can't see it in windows, but can in the BIOS

Use gparted live cd to format it.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

Where do you see it?

If you can see in my computer right click format

If you see in Disk management you can format it there

Or, as I said burn the gparted live cd, boot from the live cd, & then format it. Making sure you select the correct hard drive.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
