Solved Can i still use my existing hardrive ?

Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate, Intel pentium 4 2.40 GHz /1GB of ram
I want to replace my motherboard and cpu because they are both slow and i want something new i am buying an i5 quad core cpu . my question is am i still able to use my existing hardrive which already has alot of music and stuff and an operating system(windows 7 ultimate 32 bit) or must I purchase a new hardrive and a new operating system for this new motherboard and cpu.Or can i still use my existing hardrive with the new motherboard and cpu. Thanks:)

Depends on what type of Windows license you have. Is your computer a custom unit or an off the shelf that came with Windows pre-installed? Post the model number.

Do you realize that you're looking at almost a complete rebuild - board, CPU, RAM, video card, & probably the power supply too? You may be able to use the old HDD but if it's an IDE drive, you might want to reconsider. In any case, make sure you get a board that still supports IDE.

While your folders and files for everything but the OS may stay intact, the OS will likely balk at the change in hardware. Better to back-up everything important to CD/DVD, and do a complete reinstall. Also, make sure your new motherboard will support the drives (IDE or SATA) that you currently have.
