Specs: Windows Vista
I just bought a laptop without checking modem stats but found out its only a 56k. Is there any way to make the connection faster?

A friend said if i plug the laptop right into the phone line it'll run at the houses router speed or something like that (sorry i dont know alot about modems)

56k sounds like a dial-up modem and that is the fastest you are going to get with dial up.

However if you want to use broadband you need a broadband modem. That could give you speeds of up to 10 Mbs. Laptops don't come with built in broadband modems.

I wouldn't take much notice of what you friend is telling you either.

so im pretty much stuck with the 56k then, will this only affect things being downloaded or will it also slow down my connections when playing online games?

If the only Internet service available in your area is dial-up then yes you are stuck with 56 K. In reality you are going to get something less than 56K. 56K is an absolute maximum which is rarely achieved.

If you want anything faster you need a broadband account from an ISP, either cable or DSL. ISPs often supply a modem with the service.

Playing on-line games with a 56K modem is going to be near impossible.

Your 56k modem will do well to excede 36k, maybe 38k if you have a realy good phone line and close to the exchange.
In any case you need to sign up with an internet service provider, before you can use any modem.
Find out what service is available in your area, chances are you can get broadband which is a lot faster and you can still use the phone while connected. While dial up ties up your phone line.
You may have to buy a modem or you might get one free in the deal.
If you tell what area you are in, someone may be able to make suggestions.

"I just bought a laptop without checking modem stats but found out its only a 56k"

Which type of internet service do you have...dial-up, DSL, cable, etc? If you have dial-up, you'll have to use the 56K modem to connect to the internet & everything you do online (uploads, downloads, online gaming, etc) will be limited to 56K. And as Stuart & anmor stated, the actual speed will be lower than 56K. If you have DSL or cable, the 56K modem isn't used at all...the internet connection will either be thru an ethernet cable attached to an external modem or wireless.

The house is adsl2 i believe and I talked with the guys i bought it from and they showed me where I can find my speed and said i should be ok.

Explained that i would be limited to 56k connected to a phone line but with my wireless connection to the house's router Im running 54Mbps so I think I should be fine, thanks for the responses. It helped me understand a little more about modem connections and ill be sure to stop in here again if I have any further questions. =D

54 Mps will be connection speed between your computer and the wireless router, not necessarily your Internet speed which will be considerably less.
