can i put my max memory in one slot

Specs: Windows 7, pentium 4 2.6ghz
I have a 2Gb memory stick that someone gave me. My computer is upgradeable to 2gb of memory. Right now it has one 512mb card and one empty slot (total of two slots). Can i use that memory which would put the computer's max memory in one slot?

If your computer is actually upgradable to 2mb max then you can only use one 1gb max ram module per ram slot.

However, your computer may have a higher max memory that can be installed than you thought.

See response 5 in this for some info about ram compatibilty, and some places where you can find out what will work in your mboard for sure:

That depends on whether or not your computer will accept a 2 GB memory module.
