I have a gateway 838gm with intergraded graphics on the motherboar, but I'm trying to upgrade it. I got 3gb RAM and an Intel Pentium 4 processor, and the mother board has a PCI-Express slot available; can I install a ddr3 video card on it?

The type of memory used on the video card has nothing to do with anything other than the video card. Which card? You may want to consider a card with GDDR5 instead.

If you're installing a gaming card, make sure your power supply can handle the load. Gateway/eMachines doesn't have the greatest rep when it comes to power supplies. They use cheapo Bestec units which have a higher than average failure rate.

A point to ponder. Some of the better video cards require their own power source, and if so, the power supply needs to be able to connect to the card.
