can I copy the recovery partition?

March 26, 2011 at 13:33:47
Specs: Windows XP mc 2005, athlonX2/2G
My hdd failed, I can boot my pc from a ubuntu disk. I can read the recovery partition and other partition using the hdd as a slave. can I copy these (or rather the recovery partition) to a new (used)hdd? I dont want to pay for a new windows OS. I never made my restore disks.
If it is possible to make a working copy of the recovery partition, how do I accomplish it?

If you can read the hard drive from ubuntu then the hard drive has not failed.

What brand/model of computer?

You can use a program such a "reflect" by macrium to create an image of the entire drive including the recovery partition, but first make sure nothing else is the problem as suggested above.

The point is that the issue is probably just a corrupted Windows installation. You should be able to perform a factory restore from the boot by using certain keys. Possibly an F key. Watch your screens at start up for instructions or consult your manual.

After you have performed a factory restore you can then burn the disks.
