Probably thinks the primary is toast, because the drive is not being detected, when it is more likely the drive is toast.

No the drive is fine....it's just that the pins on the motherboard primary IDE connector
have been broken...so I can no longer connect there....seems like some settings in the bios would allow you to use your OS hard drive connected to the secondary
primary connector.

Modern BIOS will boot from any drive, primary, secondary, slave or master. You just have to tell the BIOS which one to boot from. That us usually done in the boot order settings.
