Solved can i buy ethernet wireless adaptor

Specs: XP
I currently use a usb wireless network adaptor but when I plug in my portable hard drive my internet is slow, would an ethernet adaptor be better or quicker?

If this is a desktop then just get a PCI wireless network card, they are really not that expensive and it will free up your USB port and bandwidth for other things.

A wired connection is usually faster and easier on the system.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

It's not really pracitcal to have a wired connection due to the comp being upstairs. It just seems that when I plug my portable usb hard drive in one ubs port with my wireless adaptor plugged into the other port the internet slows right down....

You can use performance monitor to view all sorts of data. It might give a clue as to what is going on.

Wireless just takes a lot of processor some times. Both encryption and data work tasks the processor. The external may be causing some more load on the cpu and the usb would be my guess.

They make all sorts of wireless cards. Usb, pcmcia, expresscard, compact flash, pci, pci-e and others that might be tried. You can try a cheap usb if you think yours is at fault. They don't cost too much.
