Cable to conect old CD writer to laptop

Specs: Windows XP
I have an old Sony drive unit which i want to connect to my Advent 4214 laptop externally via a connection cable. On the Sony CD-r/RW drive unit i have a DC input; 39 pin-interface connector; audio connections. Do i get 39-pin connector cable with a USB lead to connect to my lap top?

If it doesn't have a USB socket, or flying lead, then it's not a USB drive. It might help if you give the model number - someone might be able to identify it.

You need an external drive enclosure for an 5,25" IDE drive. For about the same price you can get a usb external CD/DVD RW drive.

If the drive is old then I agree with wizard-fred. You could get the adapter cable I am linking below. The advantage is that it can be used to connect ANY IDE or SATA drive to your PC using a USB port.

BTW, you refer to 39 pins. The interface is considered a 40 pin interface. If you look carefully you will see one pin is missing. That is not a problem though.
