Buying a monitor with a higher resolution

Specs: Windows 7 64Bit, i5 , 4GB

I am looking to buy a monitor for use with my laptop. The graphics card on my laptop supports a resolution of 1600 x 900 but I would like to get a monitor that supports a higher resolution just in case I would like to use it with something else in the future. Specifically I saw one which is 1920 x 1080. Would this work? And more importantly, if I plug in my laptop which only supports 1600 x 900, would things look really blurry?

Please accept my apologies if this is a really simple question.

"which only supports 1600 x 900"

Screen resolution support is built into the graphics driver. The max resolution your laptop screen can tolerate is 1600 x 900 therefore that is the max that is currently shown as available. If you connect an external, you should be able to adjust the resolution to the max supported by the monitor.
