Specs: Windows 7, 3.2Ghz/2GB
Hi

I am going to buy a new laptop and need advice. The laptop I had in mind was the Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110). There are 2 configurations available and I am confused that which one is the right one for me.

This laptop is going to be a replacement for my desktop because I am selling my desktop as I need the laptop for school work.

I will use the laptop for watching movies (1080p on external display), Internet, Music, School work (MS Word) and rarely ones every 2 months I do video encoding.

Now the 2 configurations are:

Configuration 1

PRICE: $645

Intel Core i5 2430M 2.4Ghz (3.0Ghz with turbo)
4GB Memory
500GB HDD SATA
NVIDIA GT525M 1GB with Optimus
15.6" LED 720p Display

Configuration 2

PRICE: $835

Intel Core i7 2630QM 2.0Ghz (2.9Ghz with turbo)
6GB Memory
640GB HDD SATA
NVIDIA GT525M 1GB with Optimus
15.6" LED 720p Display

Now considering what I use the laptop for should I get the i5 or i7? I will be keeping this laptop for at least 3 years.

Extra cores, more memory, slightly larger hard drive. The first two will improve the speed on some applications including gaming and the video encoding. If the extra money is not a big deal then more power is always better.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I can buy the i7 but if i5 can do the job and work for 3 years then it would be better. So what do you think?

It should do the job fine and save you a nice amount. Others who do video encoding might have another opinion (I do not), but even so, you are not planning on that often so a little bit more time on that might not matter to you. I'm using Core 2 Duo's right now (desktop) and the i5 should be better so there should be no reason you really need the i7.

Thanks. I'm also using the Core 2 Duo and it does the work well for me and I never felt the need for more performance.

Thanks
