Just saying that means very little.
Has the print quality on those settings become worse than it used to be?
If so, use the nozzle cleaning utility in the printer driver software.

If the print quality has always been like that and it isn't good enough, buy a better printer from the top three manufacturers (Canon, Epson or HP). Brother printers are not the best choice for good print quality.

Also consider using better quality paper. You'll never get the best quality output using cheap copy paper if that's what you are currently using. High quality inkjet paper is best.

Are you using the manufactures ink cartridges or a third party cartridge or refilled cartridges?

Thanks. This has been my first ever posting on a help forum, so was not quite sure what to expect in the input boxes. Not surprised you found the question a bit lacking on its detail! I am using non-Brother ink cartridges, which have served me well in the past. Recently I had to print out an illustration with a lot of black background, and twice the regular paper jammed. On recovering it, the paper was very wet, probably due to an overload of ink. The third attempt was with photo paper which gave a rather striated effect in the black background but the other colours in the actual image were fine. Since then the "normal" setting has given a very poor black for normal text (hardly legible) but when using the "fine" setting it has been OK. So it would appear not to be the nozzles which are faulty, but attempt the repair you have suggested.
