Solved bootsafe.exe loop

July 19, 2011 at 07:51:36
Specs: Windows XP svc pack 3, P4/ 1Gb
My computer has been hijacked, all startup items disabled and the only services are something about a remote connection. I pulled the network cable and then found I could not boot into safe mode. Can't read flash drive either so I loaded BootSafe.exe to a floppy and started it, told it to boot into safe mode, now it does a continuous loop where it tries to boot into safe mode, fails, retries, fails, I cannot even boot into Windows normally as bootsafe won't allow it. Shutting down and turning off power did not stop it. Restarting puts it back into the loop.

Boot to a live linux cd and remove any important data. Be warned that that data may be full of malware too. If you can run an A/V on it to check.

Then reload the entire OS from OEM disks. That is the only way to be sure. Then apply all service packs. Get at least microsoft's security essentials or other security suite. Learn and use as many best practices as you can. One is to not logon with an administrator but use only standard or limited user accounts. Use runas when needed.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
