Booting from external SATA HD

Dell / E520

Specs: Windows XP, 2.5
hi - my dell e520 has blinking amber on the power switch.
i've ordered a new psu but am asking a few questions just in case.
if not the psu i intend making the sata hd an external usb (i need to get outlook addreses etc) on another xp pc (emachine & ide drives).
question: is it possible to boot from the sata hd on the new pc thereby showing the "desktop" as it was on my old pc ?
many thanks - cheryl

Did you do any troubleshooting or did you just assume the PSU was bad? Hopefully you didn't order a replacement thru Dell? You could have gotten a 400W Corsair from newegg for about $35.

"is it possible to boot from the sata hd on the new pc thereby showing the "desktop" as it was on my old pc ?"

No. You would have to boot into the eMachines as usual, then plug in the external HDD. It will be like using a large capacity thumbdrive...you will have to browse thru all the files & folders looking for whatever it is you need.

thanks jam - i tested the psu (as far as it goes) by jumping the black & geen wires - still no fan or drive start so i'm hoping its the psu & not the mb.
to be honest i just ordered a cheap acer atx 305w psu just in case it wasn't the psu.
thanks also for the sata drive info regarding booting - i really need my outlook files on the new pc - i've a "very rough idea" how to transfer but will wait for the new psu before researching further on that.

thanks again - cheryl
