bios 3.31a

Specs: Windows XP
Do I need this?
I recently installed a WD sata Hd- I got it set up with xp pro, all my drivers, got it online and defragmented the HD- runs like a champ.

Thing is I have a Maxtor diamond max 10 (200g) ata hd that has about 50 gig of stuff I need. I know the maxtor is good.

I wanted this set up as a slave to the sata Wd. So after i was done, I switched the jumper on the maxtor to slave and booted my machine- It turns on fine, runs like a horse-BUT the machine will NOT recognize the ATA HD nor the ide cd burner. Only the sata (W D HD and my dvd burner) are recognized by windows now as well as my bios! I went to disk management and couldnt get anything to work, tried add new hardware, nothing. System properties- zip.
My bios now has just the WD HD and the dvd burner listed, the ide master and the slave in my bios are disconected- I tried to see if it would recognize either from the bios with no result. And yes the WD is my boot device.
On another note, I set the maxtor as master (it is ata on the ide jack #1) And the machine would not even let me into the bios!

I built this machine myself 4 years ago- it's far from perfect, but my knowledge just wont allow me to tamper with the bios without understanding what is going on. I'm running a ambios 3.31a on an msi pt8 neo V board.

any help?

"the machine will NOT recognize the ATA HD nor the ide cd burner"

Are they both on the same cable/channel? Set the burner to master & the HDD to slave.

they are not on the same channel- hd is on ide slot 1 and the cd is on ide slot 2- different cables of course- i tried swapping slots but it was the same thing, machine would boot ( no jumper in Maxtor HD) but it would not recognize the ide stuff.

If they're on separate channels, each should be jumpered as master.
