Best external USB hard drive

March 9, 2011 at 04:42:22
Specs: Windows Vista
Is there an external hard drive on the market that is considered to be the best, most reliable.

I don't need massive gb as will mainly use to store photo's on.

I want to make sure that the hard drive I purchase is compatible for at least 5 years.

Thanks

I have a Seagate external drive for a few years now with no problems. If your pics are very important, don't rely on an external media like a hard drive. They fail just like everything else. I burn mine to a cd also. As far as compatibility goes, I think NTFS will be around for a long time. Probably be around a lot longer than the hard drive.

I use a docking station (actually I have 2), that way I can swap the storage drive any time I like. It accepts both 2.5" & 3.5" SATA HDDs. I bought the Thermaltake when it was on sale for $15, here's the Rosewill version for $20 (I believe it's the same thing):

As grasshopper said, all hard-drives fail. It's just a matter of when. Purchase a good CD/DVD burner, some quality media, and burn the photos to them and keep the discs stored properly. See the "do's" and "don'ts" section of the page below:

I'd get a type that has multiple drives in it. It is called a raid array. They would be the best choice to consider. A buffalo terrastation isn't that expensive anymore.

Thanks for feedback.

Will read through the links and decide what to go for.

What I will do is have photo's on PC, CD and external hard drive. As well as printing the best (hopefully majority!) photo's.

If the external HD did fail there is a good chance the PC / CD won't fail at the same time.

I guess the fundamentals are not to have PC connected to internet when the external HD is connected.

Thanks

You can have the external HDD connected when your on the NET. It has nothing to do with anything.
