Battery Wont Charge

Hewlett-packard Compaq nx6310 notebook

I was working on my faithful HP NX6310 when I noticed that the battery lite was on, I changed to another p/supply but the status remained the same. I purchased a new Original HP P/Supply and this made no difference. The battery eventually went dead as a result, So Power supply is good but machine just wont recharge....what are my likely options

It is most likely the battery itself.

Try swapping out a battery from another computer. If that works, then it is obviously your own battery. If not, it could be an issue with the connectors inside.

Thanks for your quick response, my fuzzy logic tells me that even if my battery was no good the power supply should should keep the machine on....once plugged out I would expect the machine to die.....this is how most of my older machines works....am I making sense?

I just removed the battery from my other HP machine (I'm using it to post this msg) while working and the machine stayed on....This should rule out the problem being battery. can someone tell me aprt from the power supply what else in the laptop assists with the charging process, are there any internal fuse, diodes etc or does the m/board takes over from the internal jack that p/supply is connected to?

Thanks David, have done that quite a few times, and I did it again after reading your post...This laptop is in almost brand new condition, it has substituted for a desktop from inception (with external monitor, in other words its not a machine that has been handled or moved a lot.
